All You Need to Know about East China University fully funded scholarships in China

These scholarships to learn Chinese are offered by East China Normal University ECNU. It is a public university in Shanghai that was established in 1951 by the merger of Greater China University and Quang Hua University.

ECNU ranks among the top 600 universities in the world according to QS World university Rankings. It is one of the largest and oldest universities in China, with more than 27,000 students and a teaching staff of more than 2,000 qualified members.

East China Normal University ECNU offers around 79 bachelor’s programs, 38 master’s programs, and 26 Ph.D. programs.

In order to meet the international community’s growing demand for Chinese language teachers and facilitate the teaching of Chinese in other countries, East China University through its Language Education Center offers free scholarships to study Chinese in China.

East China University scholarships Application Eligibility

To be eligible, students should comply with these requirements:

  • Non-Chinese citizens.
  • Should be friendly to China, have no criminal record, and abide by the laws and regulations of the Chinese government and the rules and regulations of the school.
  • In good physical and mental conditions, and with a good record of academic performance and conduct.
  • Aspiring to work in Chinese language education and related fields.
  • Aged between 16 and 35 (as of September 1), with a special allowance for the age limit of 45 for applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers and 25 for undergraduate student applicants.

Scholarships types and qualifications 

There is more than one type of offered scholarships:

Chinese Language Teacher Programme

1. Scholarship for Doctor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (DTCSOL)

The program commences in September and provides scholarships for a maximum of four academic years.

Applicants shall hold a Master’s degree in majors such as Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Linguistics, or Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. Applicants shall have a minimum score of 200 on the HSK Test (Level 6), and 60 on the HSKK test (Advanced Level).

Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or proof to the same effect.

2. Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)

The program commences in September and provides scholarships for a maximum of two academic years.

Applicants shall hold a Bachelor’s degree, and have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 5) as well as 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or proof to the same effect.

3. Scholarship for Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL)

The program commences in September and provides scholarships for a maximum of four academic years.

Applicants shall hold a senior high school diploma and a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 4) as well as 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

4. Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study

The program commences in September and provides scholarships for a maximum of eleven months.

International students who have benefited from similar scholarships are not eligible.

  • For the area of TCSOL, applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 4), and an HSKK test score is required
  • For the area of Chinese Language and Literature applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 4), and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).
  • For the areas of  Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy, etc., applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 5), and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).
  • For the area of Chinese Language Study, applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK test (Level 3). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.

5. Scholarship for One-Semester Study

The program commences either in September or March and provides a scholarship of a maximum of five months. Applicants holding the X1 or X2 visa are not eligible.

  • For the areas of TCSOL, Chinese Language, and Literature, applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 4), and an HSKK test score is required.
  • For the areas of Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy, etc., applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 5), and an HSKK test score is required.

6. Scholarship for Four-Week Study

The program commences either in July or December, and provides a four-week scholarship. Applicants holding the X1 or X2 visa are not eligible.

For the areas of Chinese Study,  Chinese Language plus Home-Stay Experience in a Chinese Family, and Special Four-week Programme for Confucius Institutes, applicants are required to provide HSK test scores.

The program may be organized and applied for by a recommending institution with 10-15 participants per group. Prior to the trip, a detailed study plan shall be made in consultation with host institutions and such plan shall be submitted to CLEC for approval.

Cooperative Scholarships

Cooperative Scholarships are jointly funded by CLEC and educational departments and universities. The enrollment methods, slots, and forms of support under this type of scholarship will be updated on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship application website.

Application Procedures for East China University scholarships to learn Chinese

Online registration will be available from March 1 on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship application website (cis.chinese.cn).

Students also have to register online at ECNU application system at: lxsapply.ecnu.edu.cn.

You can log in the scholarship website to search for recommending institutions and host institutions; upload application materials online; and track the application progress, comments and results.

Scholarships Deadlines

  • For programs starting in July, applicants must complete their application before April 15 each year.
  • For programs starting in September, applicants must complete their application before May 15 each year.
  • For programs starting in December, applicants must complete their application before September 15 each year.
  • For programs starting in March, applicants must complete their application before November 15 each year.
