Nikon Small World Photography And Video Competition 2022 Details
Celebrating 47 years of images captured by the light microscope, Nikon Small World is the world’s preeminent photographic competition for images TAKEN THROUGH THE MICROSCOPE. It is comprised of 2 separate contests:
- Nikon Small World: is for STILL images taken through a microscope
- Nikon Small World in Motion: s for movies, time-lapse movies also taken through a light microscope.
The Nikon Small World Competition first began in 1975 as a means to recognize and applaud the efforts of those involved with photography through the light microscope. Since then, Small World has become a leading showcase for photomicrographers from the widest array of scientific disciplines.
Each Entrant may upload a maximum of three (3) Images during the Competition Entry Period. and Images must be submitted in .jpeg, .png, or .tiff format and do not need to be taken with a Nikon-branded microscope. The Submission must be in the English language.
In 2011, Nikon announced that it would begin accepting movies taken through the microscope as a new category in the 37th annual Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition. This new category, titled Small World in Motion, encompasses any movie or digital time-lapse photography taken through the microscope and adds a new, distinct discipline to the competition.
Each Entrant may upload a maximum of three (3) Videos during the Competition Entry Period. Videos must be submitted in .mp4, .mpg, .wmv, .avi, .or .mov format. Videos may not exceed sixty (60) seconds and not include the use of sound and may not include any graphics of any kind. The Submission must be in the English language.
Who can enter the Photography And Video Competition?
The Photomicrography Competition is open to anyone with an interest in microscopy and photography. The video competition, entitled Small World In Motion encompasses any movie or digital time-lapse photography taken through the microscope.
Both are also open to individuals who are at least eighteen (18) years old at the time of entry and have access to a light microscope.

- 1st Prize – USD $3,000
- 2nd Prize – USD $2,000
- 3rd Prize – USD $1,000
- 4th Prize – USD $800
- 5th Prize – USD $600
- 6th Prize – USD $400
- 7th-10th Prizes – USD $300 each
- 11th-20th Prizes – USD $200 each
- Honorable Mentions – USD $100 each. The number of Honorable Mention Prizes will be determined by the Judges in their sole discretion.

- 1st Prize: $3,000
- 2nd Prize: $2,000
- 3rd Prize: $1,000
- 4th Prize: $800
- 5th Prize: $600
Honorable Mentions USD $100 each. The number of Honorable Mention Prizes will be determined by the Judges in their sole discretion.
