This three-year leadership program is designed to train Engaged Leaders, equipping outstanding doctoral candidates with the skills to translate their ideas into action, for the betterment of their communities, Canada, and the world. Up to 16 doctoral Scholars are selected each year and receive generous funding for their studies in addition to leadership training in the context of Brave Spaces.

Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation scholarship Areas

The Foundation recognizes that many doctoral students are working on research projects that are interdisciplinary and qualify as advanced research in the social sciences and humanities, regardless of their faculty or department affiliation. In general, to qualify as research in the social sciences and humanities, a candidate’s research should seek “to add to our understanding and knowledge of individuals, groups and societies—what we think, how we live, and how we interact with each other and the world around us” (SSHRC 2017).

That said, applicants are eligible if their research is related to one or more of the Foundation’s Four Themes: Human Rights and Dignity, Responsible Citizenship, Canada and the World, and People and their Natural Environment. The Foundation will not assess the eligibility of individuals’ research topics by email or over the phone.

Each three-year leadership program cycle is built around a scientific theme that has interdisciplinary dimensions and reflects a timely and significant set of issues for the future of Canada and the world. The theme of the 2021-2024 Scientific Cycle will be Language, Culture & Identity.

Pierre Elliott Foundation scholarship BENEFITS

Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholars receive:

  • Membership in a vibrant community of Scholars, Mentors, and Fellows, all of whom are leaders in their respective disciplines and sectors 

  • Leadership training from our Mentors and Fellows, including unique experiential learning opportunities that enrich and complement their academic experience  

  • Opportunities to acquire greater proficiency in Canada’s official languages (French and English) as well as Indigenous languages 

  • Up to $40,000 per year for three years to cover tuition and reasonable living expenses  

  • Up to $20,000 per year for three years, as a research, networking, and travel allowance. This funding may also be used for activities related to the learning of languages (see below) 

  • Lifelong membership in the Foundation’s alumni network. 

Scholarship Application Eligibility

The following conditions must be met to apply:

  • Eligibility: Non-Canadian students who have been admitted to or are in the first, second, or third year of a full-time PhD program in the social sciences or humanities at a Canadian university.
  • There is no age requirement to apply for the scholarship.
  • Applicants must provide evidence of their strong academic performance and intellectual ability.
  • Fluency in either English or French is not required, however, all students who are not fluent in both languages ​​(English and French) are expected to take steps through formal or informal training to improve their proficiency in the formal language of which they are less familiar.

Application Procedures for Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation fully funded PhD scholarship 2022

First, go to the scholarship application site via this link. On the landing page, you can put the page language in either English or French, this will also change the application form language.

If you are not previously registered in the Foundation’s Articles of Association, you must register by clicking “Register here” and complete the eligibility criteria questions and subsequent registration information. Once the previous process is completed, you will receive an email containing a link to set up your username and password.

Email should arrive within five minutes. If you do not receive this email, please update your inbox.

Once you log in to your account on the previous site, your personal control panel will appear on the institution’s portal. You can return to your Dashboard at any time during the process by clicking “Home” in the upper right corner of your window.

Once you enter the portal, please complete the mandatory questions in your profile. If you are selected by the institution, you will be required to complete the other sections of your profile. To exit your profile, click “Next” or “Dashboard”.
